For the first 20 years of the Lexus brand's existence, performance was not really a descriptor that came to mind when you thought of Toyota's luxury lineup. They were smooth, quiet, refined, reliable, but frankly not all that exciting. Then Lexus started introducing F models and eventually the short-lived LF-A supercar. At next month's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Lexus will launch its first specific track optimized model, the 2020 RC-F Track Edition.
Nothing specific is known about the Track Edition yet other than it will have a large rear wing. The limited production track car will be derived from a refreshed version of the standard RC that also debuts in Detroit. While the Track Edition will be optimized for track day use, it will be street legal. It will likely draw some inspiration from the RC-F GT3 that has had some success over the past two years in the IMSA Weathertech GTD class as well as other series around the world.
Over the past several years, Lexus engineers have demonstrated that they can produce some cars that are extremely capable on the track including the aforementioned LF-A and even the surprisingly impressive LC500. It will be fascinating to see what they can come up with when they really set their minds to it. Lexus will provide a live stream of the reveal on Jan. 14, 2019 at https://livestream.com/lexusinternational/Detroit2019 .
