Sales of cars are likely to continue their decline in favor of SUVs for the foreseeable future but that doesn't mean automakers are completely giving up on them. At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Toyota introduced the 2018 Camry and Nissan unveiled a concept that previews the design direction for the next Altima which is likely to arrive in 2018. With a shrinking but still sizeable segment of the market, automakers clearly think that they will have get more bold with design in order to attract customers and the Vmotion 2.0 fits that bill.
At 191.3-inches long, the concept is about half an inch shorter than the 2017 Altima but the shape is more like the latest Maxima taken to the next level. Nissan designers have continued the black trimmed C-pillar that creates an impression of a floating roof as seen on other recent designs like the Murano and Maxima. However, at the front, the V-motion grille has been expanded to full height for the boldest look yet on a Nissan sedan. Along the flanks, the creases are sharper than ever giving the car an almost origami character.

In typical concept car fashion, the rear doors hinge from the back leaving an open pillar-less design that shows off the interior to showgoers. When the new Altima does arrive, expect more conventional doors. A single, wide display spans much of the top of the dashboard to provide entertainment and information from the ProPilot automated driving system that will likely arrive at some point in the next model's lifespan.
If the next Altima does look anything like this concept, it is sure to help keep the nameplate near the top of the midsize sedan sales charts.
