Perhaps this is the real reason that Apple was reportedly looking to acquire McLaren. In the run-up to this week’s Paris Motor Show, McLaren has announced its most affordable model yet and it’s all-electric. That's the kind of tech the folks in Cupertino might be interested in. However, as with all previous McLaren cars, it won’t be accessible to just anyone.

McLaren has taken the design of its plug-in hybrid hypercar, the P1 and dispensed with the twin-turbocharged V8 engine as well as the roof. It has also scaled everything down a bit, transforming the car into a single seater just like the formula one cars. In fact, everything has been scaled down so much, that no one over about the age of six will be able to use this new iteration of the P1.

By the end of October, select McLaren dealers around the world will be selling the all-new Ride On McLaren P1, a battery-powered car for the younger set. Unlike other McLarens, it doesn’t appear to be made from carbon fiber, but it also won’t cost more than the average house to acquire. The toy P1 will be offered exclusively in Volcano yellow for a price of just £375.

While McLaren hasn’t announced any racing program for this new model yet, it’s likely only a matter of time before a competitor in the Power Racing Series preps one with abeefed-upp chassis and larger batteries.
