Vapor vs. vapor? That could be the case as super-secretive EEStor could potentially face competition in the ultra-capacitor space from Recapping. We've never heard of Recapping before, but the startup is backed by Khosla Ventures and recently received a $ 1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The money is supposed to be used for research and development work on a 3D nanocomposite structure ultra-capacitor. Recapping is affiliated with Pennsylvania State University but has never publicly announced or demonstrated its technology. The project is aiming at performance of 400 Wh/kg and a target cost of around $250/kWh. If that can be achieved, a 53 kWh storage device similar to the Tesla Roadster would weigh only 292 pounds, less than one-third of the Tesla's 990 pounds.
