This time the approach is very different from the star of that film, the EV1. According to an Automotive News interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/bob+lutz\/\">Bob Lutz<\/a>, the work that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\">GM<\/a> has doing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/fuel+cell\/\">fuel cell<\/a> vehicles will contribute to a new series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/hybrid\/\">hybrid vehicle<\/a>. Where most current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/hybrid\/\">hybrids<\/a> are primarily powered by the internal combustion engines, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/research\/\">new vehicle<\/a> will run primarily off the batteries. A gas or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/diesel\/\">diesel<\/a> engine would mainly be used as a backup and to charge the battery. Alternatively, a smaller fuel cell could be used to charge the battery.<\/p>\n<p>It now appears that GM&#x27;s focus, at least in the near term, is on primarily battery powered vehicles that have onboard charging systems for extended range. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/lutz\/\">Lutz<\/a> expects significant advances in battery technology in the next few years, which hopefully will include non-exploding lithium-ion batteries.
